As temperatures soar, City Council members angered by closed Park District pools

The effort to open pools has been hampered by a lifeguard shortage — a nationwide problem but one made worse locally by a Park District lifeguard harassment scandal, despite the offer of bonuses.

Blame Lightfoot! One of the first things she did was defund the lifeguard programs that help recruit young adults/teens. Oh and guess where that money went too…the cops!!

The park district has been a total dumpster fire ever since covid hit. They stopped maintaining the parks altogether that summer, and never really started back up again in full. I'm just surprised it's taken so long for city officials to actually notice.

These are the sorts of problems mayors solve before they get to this point. I’m betting that we’re all paying the same taxes to fund the Park District’s closed pools as we’d be paying if they were staffed and open.

Crazy these divisions of City of Chicago don't talk to each other, like the alderpeople can't just go down the block/hall and slam on the Parks District's door to hammer out a resolution.
