Gov. JB Pritzker declares monkeypox a public health emergency in Illinois
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker declared monkeypox a public health emergency Monday to help coordinate a statewide response.
Not a novel virus, we’ve known about it for 50 years, not endemic to United States, we have a vaccine, no one has died. Feels like we should really be able to handle this.
It's long past time. I wonder how many people will come down with it now, after Lolla.
As of Friday, there are 330 monkeypox cases in Chicago
2.700.000 people live in chicago. 1 person in every 10.000 has monkeypox.
Anything that they can do to get more vaccines into town is welcome, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not even sexually active but as a gay man the idea that 300 of us in the community here have it is terrifying. I'm hearing that getting tested is next to impossible; I've exhausted every resource getting a vaccine for myself and only procured an appointment three weeks from now in a neighboring county.
I know that the comment sections about monkey pox tend to shift towards blame but that doesn't help much when it's nearing your own social circles. If I were to pick it up from a hug or from upholstery after having a friend over then I'd be just as affected as someone who got it from sexual contact, and those possibilities seem kind of real when reading about risk factors. So I'm glad that the city and state look to be taking it seriously. Just my two cents
Also, It is astounding how so many people seem to not know how pox diseases spread.
Seeing as this spreads through skin to skin contact, I think I'll be allright as long as I don't make any drastic changes to my lifestyle.
