Businessmen seek $5 million in TIF funding to install surveillance cameras in Fulton Market, Garfield Park

The ACLU of Illinois has repeatedly raised alarms about such cameras, warning last year that the city’s camera system “continues to operate without any regulation or privacy or regular public reporting.”

Some say they are security theater mostly catching the brand of hat the perp is wearing.

OTH, sometimes a well placed camera takes an identifiable mug shot so the policy questions are:

(1) Does the dollar cost of cameras and their subscriptions and staffing yield an ROI balanced with arrests that are based primarily on the mug shots and documented criminal acts.? (no way to document/value crime deterrence).

(2) Does the general public feel better about the politicos spending tax money than they do about continuing crime?

“The city’s first POD cameras were installed nearly two decades ago, but Romanelli and the other speakers were unable to point to any data showing they have brought crime down.”

Romanelli is all “bro, trust me! Just a few hundred more security cameras will fix it! That’s all we need!!!!”
