Here are the full recordings, which are just insane (NSFW)

This abc7 article doesn't even touch on the worst stuff

This is what was “leaked”. I can’t imagine what is said in their day to day. Constructive discharge is in order here.

These comments weren’t even borderline, they were some of the most racist comments i've heard from any politician regardless of political party (and thats saying something). They have to resign.

Finally, something that can unite this sub! Contempt for racist politicians!

Might be a good idea to not have one of the largest cities in the country governed by only 15 people. You know, seeing as how 20% of the Council is being urged to resign.

It was not clear who recorded and initially leaked the conversation, which first appeared anonymously on Reddit but was later removed from the site.

anybody know about this? wtf

City Hall needs to clean house. Deep clean. Career politicians are not doing LA any good whatsoever.

So no one is going to comment how it was probably Cedillo who recorded this in the first place? If there were only 4 of them in the room, he's the only one who didn't make any inflammatory comments. Of course he didn't "intervene" he was gathering political blackmail.

My second thought would have been and aide.

In case you're keeping track: Martinez, Cedillo and De Leon caught being explicitly racist.

Ridley-Thomas is suspended due to corruption changes. He's been temporarily replaced by Hutt, pushed for by these three in particular.

De Leon is only there because Huizar went down on corruption charges.

A fifth councilmember, John Lee, served as Englander's chief of staff and is filling his seat now. Englander is out because he was convicted in a pay-for-play scheme and served jail time.

5 out of 15 have direct ties to racism or corruption. I don't think them resigning will really make a difference. The whole system needs to be changed.

We have to make sure the whistleblower is safe, imagine knowing that the response from the people in charge is to identify the source of the leak..

huh weird the very same people who, for years, have implemented racist policies turned out to be racist themselves that’s crazy

I just don't see how these people can serve their areas who have many African Americans and overall different ethnicities other than Mexican. They don't even seem to like other Mexicans.

For example, I am Armenian, what do they think of me? Definitely something......

They are everything wrong with the current state and undermine our cause to improve LA and the lives of those who live in it.

One thing getting left out of this story is how they all admit to trying to carve up Nithya Ramen's district. Corrupt Democrats are terrified of any halfway progressive getting elected.

Racism has no place in our government, they should step down and never come back to public governance again.

How much you wanna bet she is going to spin their comments as lost in translation. Adding the -ito to the word a term of endearment.

Look these clowns need to leave office but people also need to turn up and actually vote. Most angelenos don’t vote for city elections. This scandal needs more traction so people can open their eyes and vote for decent humans who look out for the city

We need an open door policy so that these discussions are transparent and available to the public. As voters we are entitled to hear what they say.

De León issued a~~n~~ **non-**apology Sunday.

"There were comments made in the context of this meeting that are wholly inappropriate; and I regret appearing to condone and even contribute to certain insensitive comments made about a colleague and his family in private. I've reached out to that colleague personally," he said. "On that day, I fell short of the expectations we set for our leaders -- and I will hold myself to a higher standard."

Uh, that's not an apology.

“They’re raising him like a little white kid.”

Which means what, exactly? They love him? They don’t resort to violence when he needs to be disciplined?

Martinez's apology was unacceptable. She was not sorry. She won't stay on as Council President and I think she's done as an elected official in LA County. She said some very ugly things directed at many different people in LA. Her sticking around will cause more problems.

Cedillo is a clown for his response statement. He deserved to get bounced out of office during the primary. Adios cabron.

KDL didn't come across as hateful as Martinez, but he still doesn't look good. I would guess he figures a way to survive politically. But he is damaged goods now. I know he has ambition to run for mayor/governor/US Senator but I think he has to figure out a way to rebuild trust because I don't trust him right now. It's sad cuz I voted for him in the primary 😭

Yo to be fair, Nury Martinez and Kevin de León’s attitudes track precisely with the treatment I’ve experienced from their respective community in the 7ish years I’ve been in Los Angeles. They represent the mentality many of their people have very accurately. They should not have been elected in the first place and should absolutely quit, but they definitely won’t be going anywhere. Their racism is but a tiny ripple of misconduct in the tsunami of corruption oozing from city hall.

Yeah...I mean, you can screw up. There are ways back from lots of mistakes.

But if you're openly racist when you think no one's watching, your policy is racist when everyone's watching.

She should resign.

It would also be nice to lower the salience of race in politics. Latino interests are not different at the local level from those of other people, and Nury and Kevin were talking as if it's a zero-sum game. There are plenty of Latinos in South LA. What's good for South LA is good for all its residents, regardless of race. We shouldn't have this Balkanized approach to politics. It's not good in a diverse society.

The timing of this news is bad. In one month Nury will leave office. Gil has already been voted out. Only Kevin Is left in office.

Today happens to be a holiday and this broke out over the weekend. State Assembly won't be able to get working on this until Tuesday. I think they are the only ones who can actually remove them from office.

So I will be demanding some answers from them as soon as they get to back to work.

There's "candid conversations behind closed doors" and there's "these words indicate you are an absolute piece of shit as a person and should have no place in public life ever again."

This is fully the latter.
