Maxime Bernier leads protest against COVID-19 health measures and vaccination mandates

People's Party of Canada (PPC) leader Maxime Bernier was among the hundreds of Quebecers who braved the cold to denounce vaccine mandates and other health measures put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Montreal's Old Port on Saturday.

this is what I feared. people who are against the curfew but pro-vaccine would get lumped in with the 'unvaccinated lives matter' wackos

« Unvaccinated lives matter ».

Alors que les non vaccinés ont des milliers de fois plus de chance de crever de la covid, et donc de leur propre connerie, que sous les coups d’un policier.

Non mais franchement. Pas les pingouins qui glissent le plus loin.

I was there for a bit and stood aside to see the full crowd from start to finish. My estimate would be 2,000 people.

Not a crazy amount of people for the Montreal population, but it was unquestionably more than 500-600.

Also, I doubt most people knew Maxime Bernier was there… I didn’t…

I was there today, but I didn't even see Bernier, I don't think he was leading it. I saw like, one CPP sign there.

That being said, if they're the only party willing to put an end to this madness, I guess I'm voting CPP lol.

My friends got me to go, I was expecting like 67 people and most of them nutters. But it was nothing like that. I'd say at least 1000 people, most just normal folks.

I'm fully vaxxed, but I went for a few reasons...

  1. The poor/negative vaccine efficacy changes drastically what policies make sense. The vaccines dramatically reduce hospitalization, but that's it. They do not stop the spread. They will not let us eradicate covid. When unvaccinated people are contracting and spreading covid at a rate equal to or less than the vaccinated, measures like vaccine passports to prevent transmissions are laughable. Essentially vaccination comes down to your own mortality risk now, and blaming unvaccinated people for "killing grandma" is a canard.

  2. The treatment of unvaccinated people is worrisome. I have friends and family who aren't vaxxed, and the sheer amount of sneering vitriol that is directed at these people is crazy. There are entire subreddits dedicated to dancing on these people's graves. The dehumanization is mind blowing. The Quebec government is considering cutting access to essential services (groceries/pharmacies etc) for these people, even delivery options. Lol, I guess they don't need to eat. Even if they're wrong, you don't treat people like this.

  3. We need an exit strategy. Covid is going to be with us forever. The vaccines will not eradicate it, unless we magically get one that slows transmission for more than a few months at a time. It will, like other seasonal respiratory diseases, sweep through the population, mutate and come back, again and again. There will, every year going forth, be some amount of covid deaths.

So if covid is here forever, are we going to lockdown forever too?

After all, we "let" thousands of people die of the flu and other communicable diseases every year before the pandemic by not being locked down.

Saving lives is good, but it isn't the only good. We need to set an amount of deaths that we're ok with, or this never ends.

  1. I believe in informed consent for medical procedures. Before the pandemic, this was not a controversial opinion. I work in medical research, and we all have to take training about how awful it is if you don't give all the details and convey risks accurately and in good faith to patients. God forbid you coerce a patient into consenting.

But of course, that's exactly what we're doing. Threatening to fire people, preventing them from collecting unemployment insurance, arbitrarily restricting their access to services when everyone is spreading covid regardless of vaccine status. And now the government is considering just simply making it non-optional.

The worst part is that it allows us to look at our 90% vaccination rate and pretend all these people did it willingly, and not because we threatened them. We can pretend we didn't achieve that by unethical means.

The very same people who tell us how our government is an evil, racist, sexist, homophobic, imperialist, corporate-controlled dictatorship, turn around and tell us there's no good reason to not trust the intentions and motivations of the government and that therefore, we don't need the emergency break of consent. Ok...

The last time Canada decided the "greater good" could override medical consent, doctors forcibly sterilized a bunch of indigenous and mentally handicapped people. I'm not suggesting anything like that is happening, but holy shit, mandatory consent is a rule for a reason. Doctors are human. They can be wrong , misinformed or debauched. The acadmeic consensus can be wrong. The public consensus on the "greater good" can actually just be plain be evil. We recreate this ethical environment at our own risk.

Sorry, that was long. A lot on my mind today. Stay safe out there!

Unvaxxed logic: « no more measure we’re done with this virus!! » proceeds not to take the vaccine that could end it and die from it

The top votes here make me sad. I was there today, protesting the government's heavy-handed unilateral power trip. 99% of the signs I saw were pro- human rights. Sure, there were some extremist, and apparently, Maxime Bernier was there, but that wasn't the majority.

But sure, by all means, put down those of us asking for science and accountability. It's easier, in a way, I guess. 😡

Wow this sub. Pissed off that the government is posing curfews and rules everywhere, but pissed that its the wrong crowd that's protesting it.

Who do you think organizes protests in general? Climate change, student protests, etc... its the people that are the most angry. You don't need to support Bernier but you can support the cause.

I dont see any "Anti Curfew But Organized By Vaccinated" protests

Look at all of you..so divided. Double, triple, quad, or zero vaxxed, it doesn’t matter. We’re all fighting with each other so our governments don’t have to take ultimate responsibility and have a scapegoat. “Well, we wouldn’t be in this mess if it wasn’t for…” Then their reasoning is shot and they find new bs to spout. Have you not seen the pattern for the last two years. You are all fools for chewing on that shitty piece of meat the gov has fed you. Stand together (6 feet apart)!!!! Anti-vaxxers may not be the best at math, but neither are you..toting bs numbers “did you know a 6th of a 3rd of an 8th of all infections result in X” you fools! You can’t fathom how ridiculous you sound when you can’t identify a single variable that went into the equation. You believe you are standing on the right side of the fence, but jokes on you. There is no fence and the yard you think you’re shitting in, is actually your own. Well..Public Health said. Well..the PM said. Well..the health regulators who are funded by big pharm said. Well the very credible man in the media said. LOL would you like some salt and pepper for your regurgitated plate of bs. You mock others for being naive whilst taking a sip from the orange kool aid instead of the red. It’s all kool aid! It would be nice to know our population was capable of critical thinking but unfortunately, you all care more about Entertainment Tonight then reality, your freedom and your rights. All good cause the gov is our friend right? and only wants the best for us all right? - crickets

I think now we should stop the mesures, clearly people doesn’t care anymore and everyone at work is tired (Im studying at the Neurological Institute). The problem is that we are stopping the care of other patients for the Covid ones and maybe they should remain at home and hope for the best while we treat the others that have non preventable diseases, honestly really tired of people that got covid in the most irresponsible way and now we are stuck with them

The placard in the photo says unvaccinated lives matter. If the unvaccinated truly cared about the lives of the unvaccinated, they would take the damn shot and encourage others to do the same.

6 hours ago you said it was only a couple hundred. Now it's thousands. How do you expect people to believe you are a credible news source when you distort the facts?

I guess since all the videos have come out you had no choice but to correct it.

Media cant even give us a real number of how many people showed up?

Trying to downplay it as usual.

I found this account on Instagram earlier today that had a drone video of the protest.

Drone footage of protest.

That looks like just a small part of the crowd and its way more then 500-600 people..

Je suis avec @MaximeBernier The government should not create a new crisis by confronting the citizens, because it would not be fair to single out people who smoke for increasing hospital beds or alcoholics. Stop stigmatisation right now against people doesn't believe you.
