Quebec is dealing with a significant teacher shortage, and in an effort to fight it, the English Montreal School Board has begun recruiting teachers from France.

Might not be a bad thing. Just look at the image linked to this article. The sign on the door says « Bievenus »…. Can’t even spell « Welcome » correctly in French!

EMSB teacher here: this is a bandaid solution.

Beyond just a general shortage, the education sector's greatest challenge is retention. I forget the exact figure, but another teacher once told me the numbers of how many teachers end up quitting before they hit the 5-year mark and it was remarkably high. Even in my 3 years of teaching, I've seen a couple of people who went through my education program with me decide to move on to greener pastures. Bringing in 20-somes from France won't be enough; eventually they'll realize that the pay for teachers here is below the national average, or get burnt out from overpacked classes.
