New York ends its contact tracing program amid omicron surge

New Yorkers who test positive for COVID-19 should no longer expect a phone call from a health care worker asking them about their close contacts.

PS, this is for the state’s response, and the hundreds of towns/cities/hamlets/suburbs across the state (& ~~62~~ the other 57 counties) will have to find their own way to do contact tracing to keep their own residents safe. NYC’s test & trace corps in the meantime will continue their work, at least until the pandemic is over, once and for all.

“New York City operates the largest municipal contact tracing program in the country and will proudly continue to do so. Our mission ends when the pandemic does.”

Contact tracing for such a contagious disease - even before Omicron - has been one of the biggest boondoggles of our times.

NYS contact tracing called me 10 days after my rapid test was positive bc my PCR results took 8 or 9 days to come back. This was under the old rules so I was out of quarantine. I told them the date I tested positive and they said they had no more questions and hung up.

Based on this experience I can’t imagine the overall program was very effective.

It shouldn't be ended, but it should likely be suspended, since with even 15% positivity, it's not really practical since we're dealing with a web of contacts, not a tree.

In my experience, the city’s contact tracing efforts is a joke.

Last February, my sister tested positive for Covid. She gave the contact info of people who she may have been in contact with and rightfully quarantined for 2 weeks.

One day before my sister’s final day of quarantine, I get a call from the city’s contact tracing team about possibly being exposed to Covid and to get tested.

I was puzzled as I’ve known about my sister’s positive diagnosis for almost 2 weeks by now and I already tested negative the day after I found out.

I tell the person on the phone that the only person I’ve possibly been in contact with is my sister, that I tested negative the next day, that I have been staying home to limit exposure and that my sister is on her second to last day of quarantine.

The contact tracer didn’t really have anything to say afterwards, apologized a little and I think we both realized at that moment that their lousy efforts were fucked.

I'm not sure that the contact tracing program had much efficacy before Omicron.. right now, with so many people getting infected, it's completely pointless. At this point just get your shots and accept that unless you live like a hermit, you're gonna get it eventually
