It sounds like the killing was far from random, and the suspect had been harassing and threatening the Asian restaurant employees for months.

He was working three jobs to take care of his three kids. Just so awful. There is a gofundme for his family; I think linking would be against sub rules, but it can be easily found by googling. I need it to hit its goal to restore my faith in humanity a bit.

This is bonkers.

The guy was reported to have a gun and using the gun to threaten violence.

Then he goes on to commit murder.

Why the heck he was not put in jail?

Where’s the police? Where’s the DA?

JFC this is sad. That guy was out busting his ass to eke out a life for himself and his family and this POS kills him over fucking duck sauce.

This delivery man worked specifically for that restaurant and not for an app, so lots of people in the neighborhood knew him. His “American” name was Ian and he was on friendly terms with a lot of people in the apartment towers across the street. Two murders in two weeks in Forest Hills is really, really weird - it’s notably one of the safest places in Queens.

NYPD and being useless yet again. The owner and employees called them so many times after being harassed, assaulted and threatened with a gun.

Use fucking less

But let's vote in a corrupt cop to be mayor. Let's see how that goes

I want to know if the restaurant reported this guy to police and what the Queens DA did. I saw an earlier story that he waved a gun at workers.

So sick and tired of people asking for help and dudes like the guy that murdered Yan being left until they kill someone, and this is just what reformers wanted, for creeps like the killer to simply not be tried until it's way past "too late" to protect the public. The odds are he should have been booked on multiple other occasions before this.

post the fucking ARTICLE

He may have been killed in a simmering beef that started over duck sauce.

A longtime co-worker of the Chinese food deliveryman fatally shot in Forest Hills on Saturday told The Post that the disgruntled customer wanted for questioning by cops in the slaying first hassled the joint over the amount of duck sauce it gave him.

One night late last year, “The customer came in and ordered some food,” recalled Great Wall restaurant worker Soi Chung, 70. “He left with the food but then came back and said, ‘It’s not enough.’ He came to the counter and wanted more food, more duck sauce.

“They had an argument, and the boss said, ‘It’s enough already,’ ” said the employee, who has worked at the Queens eatery for 20 years. “The guy left the restaurant and later came back and threw the duck sauce, everything, all over the place. So the police came and took a report, but the guy was gone.”

Chung said the irate customer only got more daring and dangerous.

“After that, sometimes, he’d be waiting around outside,” Chung said. “He’d say to the boss and to the delivery guy and to one of the chefs, ‘I remember you. I remember you. Chung and another employee said the 50-year-old angry patron even pulled a gun on staffers in January and vandalized their cars, including slashing the tires on the manager’s car.

Chung said the harassment ended when the workers reported the gun incident to cops.

Police are now probing whether tragic hard-working immigrant Zhiwen Yan, 45, was targeted by the customer, with detectives seeking to question the man, according to law enforcement sources.

Yan, a married father of three who migrated from China about 20 years ago, was making a delivery near 108th Street and 67th Drive in Forest Hills around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when he was shot once in the chest and knocked off his scooter.

He was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police sources have said the description of the vehicle fleeing the scene of the fatal shooting — an older Lexus SUV — matches that of the customer’s car.

The Post is withholding the customer’s name because he has not been officially named as a suspect or a person of interest in the case.

People at the restaurant patron’s nearby apartment building described him Monday as a menace.

“I call him ‘the Terminator,’ ” said a worker at the building. “He’s in and out quickly. We had issues with him. He always wears those dark wrap-around sunglasses. Never says anything. Big dude. Quiet. Keeps to himself. He’s a hoarder,” the worker added. “He was grabbing people’s packages, and when they called him on it, he argued, yelled, denied it. We got cameras all over the building.”

Meanwhile, the Great Wall restaurant was closed for the second straight day Monday. A memorial for the beloved slain deliveryman has sprouted up outside.

I grew up in a town where a chinese delivery man was also killed. A group of teenagers a few years older than me chided this man until he kicked them out of their restaurant. Once outside, they proceeded to assault the man, eventually ripping the branch off of a tree and striking him in the head, killing him. That was 15 years ago.

:edit:

I’m in a Jersey suburb right outside of Manhattan for greater context. This type of stuff has been happening for way too long. It’s just finally under a microscope.

There’s not enough attention heard from the violence that Chinese delivery endure. I heard from my local delivery driver that they’re robbed and beaten more than we’d like to hear. In addition, this was happening before Covid happened and now it has exacerbated it.

“It was a new car, 2021 Honda CRV. Around back, tires slashed three times. I start parking in front so I can see. We see him on Jan. 28 damaging the car, and I come out and say, ‘No! No!’ and he pulled a gun on me! I ran back inside. I call police, fill out report.”

Yang said the crazed customer was wrestled to the ground by employees during the gun incident.

Among those who tackled the violent patron was Zhiwen Yan, the 45-year-old deliveryman shot dead Saturday night, the owner said.

But despite repeated calls to police over time about the angry customer, the patron was never charged, Yang said.

If ever there were a reason to be able to carry for your own protection....The people who run this city are not going to protect you!

One of the oldest and shittiest things about living in the projects... I remember when I was a kid people regularly place orders to the Chinese spot so they can jump them or rob them in the elevators.

People cried racism when lots of these restaurants started to decide they would cease to deliver to certain locations but no one ever respected the underlying problem that led to that decision. Sad because redlining or whatever is obviously bad but we ignore a whole lot of reality in this city.

I was hoping Eric Adam's would be less theatrics focused but idk at this point. Sad to see stupid crimes committed against service industry workers so often these days.

It takes a human life for cops to do something and even then noting will happen. Just look at that person who pushed the asian lady in the subway tracks. He was deemed not trial-able

He delivered all around the neighborhood (Great Wall is across the street). So often that at times you’d think he had clones! Super hard working and decent guy. Such a senseless and tragic loss.

Why didn’t the cops do their job and confiscate the gun on Jan 28th during his first time attacking this place? Why aren’t they saying the name of the murderer?

The NY Daily News gives an interesting tidbit: "Police traced the plate and identified the customer as a nearby resident with 10 arrests between 1995 and 2012, all of which are sealed, sources said. One of the arrests, police sources said, involved a robbery with a gun."

Probably a ne'er-do-well who had a history of juvenile criminality (hence the sealed status of their history), inheriting an apartment in expensive area (or a rent control/stabilized apartment) and never really does reform themselves.

Sounds like crime is up because police don’t do anything until somebody dies. Fucking useless- this is why we need funding for mental health services, which could easily be paid for using the bloated police budgets.

Safety in numbers so the next step may be for them to not do delivery anymore. This turnstile of having criminals who show a pattern of not changing is ridiculous. At this point the rights of the chronically misbehaved cannot trump the rights of the rest of us.

Yes, half a dozen bad puns are perfectly appropriate in a story about the murder of a man.
