From a comment posted on the NYT article:

It may come as a shock to most, but there was a time, in the memory of some of us former parents of babies, when there were no disposable diapers and most babies thrived on home made evaporated milk plus corn syrup formula ( plus drops of vitamin-mineral supplement given separately.) We used cloth diapers that folded and were pinned. They were laundered in the washing machine after getting their first rinse in the toilet (and then stored until laundry time in something called "the diaper pail.") Even Dads like me, as well as Mom, could and did handle all of those chores.

Those babies thrived. If not they would not have been here to be your parents and grandparents. Now there is some food for thought.

There are 3 companies in the United States that make 98% of the baby formula, Abbot Labs, Mead Johnson and Nestle.

Abbot shut down production because of contamination, that killed two babies a few months back and that obviously didn't help supply issues

Baby Formula is regulated by the FDA and it's not a drug but it's not like producing a Snickers ba, either because of the nutrients required.. The bar to get new baby formula onto the market is high and requires lots of up front costs, tests and time.

So like a lot of other things in the United States it's a monopoly product because of the costs to enter the market. So very few new entrants appear because of regulations and when one manufacturer stumbles the supply chain is fucked up. The FDA is a double edged sword

Stop big monopoly!!! They are bad for all except for the wallets of the owners of the monopoly. More companies should be able to produce and distribute baby formula!!!! Change comes from within, you want the system changed … you need to all Be active in politics and so forth ..
