Some Chelsea residents say drug use, crime in area is out of control

Some people living in Chelsea say drug use on their streets is so bad, they're in the process of hiring private security. They tell CBS2's Lisa Rozner their cries for help to the city are going unanswered.

Live in Chelsea and can confirm. Train station has become their base at times. Recently on my way to work and two guys were slumped over on the stairs. One of them standing and nodding off. Seen several people smoking crack out in the open. I'm in two different online groups and they're all complaining about it. 8th Ave is the absolute worst!

Yet the average rent is 6K. It doesn’t add up.

The one lady "This is a 3 ring circus" after 11PM lmao jesus. I wonder if the open drug use and other antisocial behavior observed around Penn is basically spreading south? Guess it's nicer to shoot up by a little garden level apartment in Chelsea than outside Penn. Sucks to see more communities getting hit with this kind of chaos.

The smell from the West 14th subway platform confirms this.

In the past month or so I’ve been groped on my way to the gym at 7AM (6’4” male) and had to call the police on a homeless man attacking a couple outside of McDonald’s in broad daylight. Chelsea is great for getting to other neighborhoods quick but can’t wait to move when my lease is up. The neighborhood sucks and I’m tired of the bs

It has gotten so bad, my employer provides uber stipends to safely get home for folks working in the office past 6:30 due to the sketchiness by our office.

Maybe it’s time that they stop voting for the morons that ostensibly think that this is desirable

Saw a dude shooting up into his calf on the corner of 30th and 6th last week in broad daylight around 5:00. Bunch of kids around, really disgusting.

Not a surprise, 8th ave from 20’s to 30’s is a shithole. Between the psycho homeless people and druggies walking there at night is a total crapshoot.

8th Ave and 22-19ish is a shit show, scaffolding has been up for years on the west side of the ave, sex workers and zonked out users mill about all day.

Surprised to see so many comments about the Mitchell-lama housing in the mid 20's as that is NOT the problem area compared to the area south in the heart of chelsea.

live in chelsea and wrote an email to the 10th precinct last week complaining about these same issues but it was predictably ignored. our local fruit stand guy got beat badly and robbed a couple weeks ago. zombie looking junkies everywhere. purse snatching at children's parks. car break ins. store robberies. never felt this unsafe in my neighborhood

I don’t live in the area but I work in the area, I can definitely confirm this. I take the train to work and dread having to get off at 14th St station because I almost stepped on a dirty needle there more than once.

Don’t worry everyone. Our mayor ran on the premise of being a cop, finding the shit out of the nypd, and bringing safety to the city. /s

Good thing we keep fellating the NYPD and giving them billions of dollars.

/s

Edit: No, I don't think drug use should be a criminal matter. I was speaking to the "...and crime..." aspect of this. The NYPD is largely useless.

Close down the methadone clinics. NYC can’t be a destination for strung out druggies from the region

Call 311 and make a complaint. Write your local city council member. Call your local precinct.

I've stayed in Chelsea several times, and hung around there to eat out & do some deliveries. Can confirm. The amount of druggies I see around there and the herald square/Hudson Yards area is like an infestation.

Yeah a lot of people think chelsea is just the high line and nice art galleries, but forget that Penn South is right there on the border
