First bus of migrants sent by Gov. Abbott in Texas arrives in NYC

Just days after Mayor Eric Adams turned down Greg Abbott's invitation to visit the southern border, the Texas governor's first busload of border-crossers arrived in Manhattan Friday morning.

I don't like immigrants being used in such a manner for the political scoreboard.

However, as an immigrant, I will tell you right now that while I'm well aware of the everyday issues that burden the citizenry and our home, I will forever be brimming with pride for what this city means to me and many others around the world.

I journeyed here from a distant land in troubled times and the stories of this grand metropolis rang true. The lamp was ablaze by your golden door and my mom and I were welcomed with open arms.

I shall do the same in-kind.

Why does Abbott think that NYC somehow controls immigration policy? Can we send violent gang members and serial shoplifters to Texas?

”Because of President Biden’s continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies, the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe,” Abbott said in his Friday statement.

”In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city. I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief,” he continued.

It’s fascinating to me how these politicians are literally toddlers in suits

I hope he’s sending some of the federally allocated funds given to Texas to support the communities of people crossing into Texas along with them.

Oh, he’s not against receiving funds for his state, just against using those funds for their purpose? Weird.

Can we load up busses full of proud boys and those people who scream about Jesus in times square and send them to Texas? I feel like it's a fair trade.

A few dozen immigrants joining a city of several million immigrants barely deserves this comment being written

I dunno, just based off of appearance alone, I'd prefer these guys over the crackheads in my 'hood. How about we send some of those crackheads to Texas and hit 'em with the "no takebacks"?

NYC with a housing crisis vs Texas with massive amounts of unused land.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she with silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

Kinda reminds me of the Muriel Boatlift when Castro masterfully played US policy to embrace Cubans under the guise of “freedom from communism” and he essentially filled the boats with convicts and mental patients.

I think NYC should put together a couple bus loads of people convicted of illegal gun possession and heinous crimes and drop them off on Abbott’s doorstep…

All of these comments miss the point. So what? Have any of YOU noticed a buss of migrants changing your life? NOPE.

Done. Fear mongering is pathetic and should be sneered at.

Democrats should run with this. Embrace these people with open arms, take pictures of the families in front of the Statue of Liberty, point out how Jesus would accept people in need, and show the country how Abbott and the GOP’s treatment of migrants actually contradicts everything this country was built on.

Bonus points if Dems can point out how this isn’t very “pro-life”, and argue to remove federal funding sent to Texas for border control programs (and for that matter, reduce the funding we send to red states in general).

All of you are a prime example of lib whites virtue singling but the when the issue is at your doorstep ya complain. Same thing with crime that I see on this sub all time where people downplay it cause ya don’t live in the bx, Harlem or east Brooklyn. Half of you are expats here for a few years but the natives New York gotta deal with your shitty voting choices

What a petty move. Trying to throw our sanctuary laws in our face and basically saying “Fine you care about them so much, YOU take them!”

We should send the homeless down to red states, considering how much we subsidize them. I'll take that trade easy.

My great grandmother came into NYC as a 13 year old unaccompanied minor in 1906. I shall welcome these travelers.

There are help wanted signs EVERYWHERE. Surely we need workers.

The beauty of nyc: if you choose nyc, nyc will take you. The question is do you have what it takes? As an immigrant myself, I love nyc because hard works pay off here.

""In the governor’s announcement, his office pointed to New York City’s
right to housing laws which require the local government to provide
“emergency shelter for every unhoused person.

... Buddy there's at least one homeless person PER BLOCK in Manhattan. That has never changed.

I'm loving all of these "OH YEAH, well maybe we should load up a bus of <insert mischievous group here> and bus them down to Texas and see how Abbott likes it!" comments. These all feel like Freudian-slip-style admissions to the countless number of lawless groups that seem to do whatever da fuck they want in this city. And I know it's a joke, but honestly this place and its politicians would never have the balls to send a busload of vagrants down to Texas. If Republicans are the party of stupid actions, then Democrats are the party of absolute inaction. I dunno which is worse.

Why are we upset about this? Genuinely curious. If we think NYC is better because of immigration and is overall better than Texas, we should welcome more immigrants, can someone enlighten me on the actual issue?

Some of my best friends are immigrants. A few generations ago my family members were immigrants. I think its a myth that a majority if them do nothing but stress resources - I've never seen it. Especially immigrants south of the border. They're some of the hardest workers and nicest people. Best of luck to them here.

We should take the money we send to red states and repurpose it to get these people on their feet and into our culture.

Regardless of how you feel about the US immigration policies, this is such a disgusting move by Abbot. Using actual human beings as pawn in some kind of fuck you move to NY, fucking grow up.

I personally have zero issues with immigrants- legal or illegal. The issue is with policy. We need to create a better system for employment- we desperately need workers and we need to figure out a better way to deal with remittances so that the money that goes back to home economies improves them instead of into dictators pockets so that we can have freedom of moment in the Western Hemisphere. Everyone should be able to be documented and tracked. We need to allow workers to come here legally and crush the trafficking, labor abuses and tax dodging.
