NY’s first legal weed retail licenses to be awarded Monday — as black market thrives

New York's Cannabis Control Board is poised to award its first retail licenses to sell legal cannabis products — but regulated dealers will face getting smoked out by a thriving black market.

Yes, the government was too slow, but the pearl-clutching by the Post is equally inane.

I have an illegal weed store on my block, hell, it even has an openly advertised "Cannabis Happy Hour" with discounts, but the environment, knowledge, and the quality of flower and carts don't compare at all to good CO/CA legal rec dispensaries. Maybe I'd keep buying edibles there if a good legal dispensary opened nearby, but that's it. The experience and quality of the legal stores will quickly crowd out the grey market ones.

In typical government fashion, they argued over details for 20 months after passing the law before giving out even one license.

What the hell did they think was going to happen?

y’all really just eat up the post smh. This program will be the first of its kind in the country give it a chance ffs. The war on drugs absolutely devastated so many communities in this country. This program is a modest effort at repairing some of that damage. Give it a chance and stop whining over a headline.

I’m confused. 3 weed shops have already opened on my block in the past few months, and yet the upscale grocery store nearby has been applying for permission to open a sister wine store for at least THREE YEARS now. Make it make sense.

To add insult to injury they were allowed to sell wine in their store during covid which went great, and then had that right ripped away again when things went back to normal. People out here trying to run a business and the city won’t give them permission.

There’s been a weed store right next door to me. Full on bags and bags of weed and edibles and all that. Been there for months now

Is it really even a black market if it's out in the open?

Instead of a simple fix we have to do a whole bunch of useless stuff and limit licenses to make the black market or rather just our weed guy still the preferred way to pay

Then the tough on crime crowd will be able to say see it’s legal but still sold illegally and restart mass incarceration.

It was sabotaged from the start.
