Wow - for those that don't know, this is actually one of Regal's premiere locations in the US and home to a lot of its special events (alongside the one in midtown) and such, in the same way AMC Lincoln Square is for AMC. The problem was always that it just wasn't a great theater... actually it was kinda a bad one. I hear Essex Crossing is legit though.
This space is going to be empty and dead for a long time, can't see anyone using this space. The whole building needs to be gutted.

We got bedbugs here about a decade or so ago. End of an era 😥

Before the movie started the projectionist messed up and displayed the computers desktop. We watched em through to the file and and hit play. People got audibly bummed. Really gonna miss that place

The rent there must have been astronomical. Given that Regal is trying to reorganize in bankruptcy and has the rare opportunity to get out of unfavorable leases early, I’m not surprised it’s on the list.

Damn, this was where me and a buddy saw the original Pokémon movie, summer of 2000, when we saw on the marquee that the last show time was at 12:30 am. And we were like, “who tf is seeing this kids movie at 12:30 at night?”
The answer is we did, and we were the ONLY motherfuckers in the whole damn place. We each sat on clear opposite sides of the theater, screaming things at the screen and each other. Just on some crazy, young dumbass shit. Good times. Ah well. First the Virgin Megastore, now the Regal. Alas, nothing fun left on that block…

They finally did it. The bed bugs have taken it for themselves.

I just went to a Regal on a Saturday, and sure, it was an afternoon, but it was a ghost town. I certainly don't spend much time at movie theaters anymore when 6 out of every 10 movies are super heroes and there's inevitably someone nearby talking over the movie. In that ghost town of a theater, there were four other people, and the two closest to me were talking between every bite of popcorn. At least this time I was able to remedy the situation by just moving to the back of the theater, but it's a hard sell to spend so much money at the movie theater when my TV still looks pretty good, and I can pause it to go to the bathroom.

Oh, wow. Who the hell are they gonna get for that space? I’m guessing it’ll be a ghost building for years.

I saw Kanye and Kim Kardashian there once. They had (evidently?) rented out the entire theatre to themselves. There was some paparazzi there, and as soon as a few people gathered trying to take photos...one of the paparazzis got PISSED. Started shooing people away, trying to block people from taking photos going like "nah this is mine, get your own, go away" lol. Bottom feeder.
I wonder what Kim and Kanye were watching that day...

I’ve been looking to go to a movie for so long bc I kinda miss it. I wouldn’t mind spending the money but all the movies coming out are hot garbage
Wonder if these places could win back some business by playing ‘classic’ movies instead of the steaming piles Hollywood puts out now

This is a common tactic in bankruptcy to renegotiate the lease. It's not clear they will actually vacate. Will depend what the property owner sees as the highest rent option for the space.

This was the Moviepass spot. $20 movies for free, almost daily. Saw nearly every release here from 2012-2018. Won my girlfriend and wife rubber ducks from the claw machine. They gave me a free icee when I told them I had gotten an eviction letter. Sad, but the writing was on the wall when they leased the lobby to Lavazza.

End of an era.
Union Square used to be the downtown spot for everything and everyone. It was basically an outdoor mall with the best park.
There was
- Music - Virgin store (RIP) for your music needs
- Comics - Forbidden Planet used to be 2-3 floors
- Books - Barnes and Noble and Strand
- Toys/Kids Items - Toys R Us/Baby’s R Us, Children’s Place (RIP)
- Clothes - Forever21 (RIP) now Burlington/DSW/Whole Foods
- Movie - the movie theater

Was this the theater with the stairs you could walk down around the side or back and get to the theaters on other levels? That was so convenient when I would get lost looking for my theater

This place is known for security checking your bags for sneaking food in

I walk past this place everyday and see how empty it is so this doesnt come as a surprise to me lol

This post has more clarifications. It is not definite it will closed. It is in the middle of a lease negotiation.

Good. It sucks. So disappointed when I went there instead of my regular Essex crossing

Damn. I saw the first The Matrix here when I decided to skip work for the day. Had entire theater to myself. Amazing experience i remember to this day.

We live upstate in Ithaca. Home to Cornell and Ithaca College but Regal is closing here too. We have no real alternatives

Nyc is changing for the worse it will never be the same again
