I think this is great. Sure, cars that are blocking things need to be towed, but why not give drivers a chance to move first? It saves people from a huge expense plus it gets the spot cleared up faster, which is after all, the goal (and now I wait for the law-and-order contingent of this sub to come downvote me and explain why people who block driveways should be given 10 year federal prison sentences and that Chesa Boudin has, in fact, offered fellatio and a Nordstrom Rack gift card to anyone caught parked in a driveway 馃槀)

From the article, you have to pre-register your phone number / license plate to get a text before tow. Here鈥檚 the link to the SFMTA.

You have 30 minutes to move your car.

You have 10 minutes.

Your car has been impounded.

Your car has been crushed into a cube.

You have 30 minutes to move your cube.

So if your car gets stolen and the thief parks it in a tow away spot will this new service tell you where your car is located?

On the one hand, this might get people to come move their car more quickly, resulting in less time illegally parked. On the other hand, it might encourage people to park illegally more often for short periods of time, since they know they'll get a warning before being towed. I feel like a good compromise would be that if you get a text alert, you also get a ticket, so it's not like you can park anywhere with no consequences as long as it's 20 minutes or less. Parking tickets are like $100, which is enough that people want to avoid them, but much better than $500+ and spending half a day getting your car back from the impound lot.

Great news, now pickups for the cafe next door can block our driveway even more without any risk!
