Unbelievable someone decided to write an article about this. Going on a frozen lake was considered normal human behavior from the ice age until about 2010. It's not hard to both gauge how safe ice is and get out safely if you fall in.

Looks like a great place to have some rat hockey. Glad those guys went out there and skated around.
