Some clarification: Games will be played at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara
"San Francisco will be hosting the 2026 World Cup game an hour drive outside city limits"
Screw the haters, I'm pumped for this! Great for the Bay Area, great for improving soccer's visibility in the US, and won't be huge drag on our infrastructure like the Olympics would be.
Santa Clara can certainly have all the traffic and logistics mess. Levi's Stadium and the surrounding area is a soulless husk of urban sprawl.
It’s been known for awhile that SJ would get some games, but super excited about the announcement today nonetheless! It’ll be the third World Cup that the Bay will have hosted!
A bit of self-promotion, but I’m part of the group that runs the American Outlaws chapter in San Francisco- AO is the biggest supporters’ group for US soccer.
We always meet up at McTeague’s on Polk street to watch the US games together- we’ll be there for a few friendlies over the coming weeks, and then for the World Cup later this year too, of course!
Everyone’s welcome to join, whether you’re just learning to watch soccer for the first time, or you’re already in real deep into all the leagues. Mention you’re from reddit and first round’s on us! :)
