$5 million for each longtime Black resident? S.F. has a bold reparations plan to consider

King could have been describing today's San Francisco, a 47-square-mile city that's home to more than 60 billionaires and at least 7,000 homeless people, around 40% of whom are Black, despite Black people representing only 5% of the population. The...

San Francisco is a joke… what about the Japanese that lost their homes here during world war 2 when they were shipped off to camps here in the USA ? What about the countless others that have suffered throughout history?

Giving money away doesn’t fix anything other than just making select individuals rich.

Wish our officials would focus on QOL improvements, infrastructure, and education. Is that too much to ask?

I read the article and the reparations for San Francisco Black residents isn’t even for slavery. It’s for basically racial discrimination of not allowing to buy properties or get jobs in San Francisco.

When do other minorities get their fair share in this discrimination? I’m pretty sure Asians, Latinos, Native Americans and any marginalized community in San Francisco were barred from owning property and jobs at some point. Remember when Chinese people were not allowed to marry outside of their race, buy property and forced to live in Chinatown? Do Chinese people get 5 million too?

What about the Russians and Italians when they came to San Francisco and were viewed as minorities in the early days of this country? When they were forced to live in their own ethnic communities? Do they get 5 million?

This is dumb as fuck.

AARAC calls for one-time, lump-sum reparations payments of $5 million to each eligible recipient. The amount could cover the “the economic and opportunity losses that Black San Franciscans have endured, collectively, as the result of both intentional decisions and unintended harms perpetuated by City policy,” the draft states.

To qualify for the payments, residents must be 18 at the time the committee’s proposal is enacted, and have identified as Black or African American on public documents for at least 10 years. They may also have to prove they were born in the city between 1940 and 1996, have resided in San Francisco for at least 13 years, and be someone, or the direct descendant of someone, incarcerated during the war on drugs.

The criteria seem oddly specific; do all who wrote the draft coincidentally qualify?

Is the implication that anyone not Black and incarcerated would by now have a liquid net worth of 5 million? What percentage of unincarcerated whites have 5 million?

No doubt that 5 million figure is an "opening bid". But even with discrimination, many Black folk have struck it rich in America, from Madame CJ Walker to Lonnie Johnson to Robert L. Johnson.

Some smart or lucky folk bought Apple and Amazon, some other folk invested in Blackberry and Sears, are we to give reparations based on the idea that every Black person, in the absence of discrimination, would have made all the best and luckiest investments?

Sometimes we really do deserve to be mocked by the right wing. This is straight from a Dave Chappelle skit. Blacks will get $5m and the price of Nikes will skyrocket

That is nuts! Do I get reparations because my parents were not able to buy in St. Francis Woods even though my Chinese American father served in the US Army in WWII. Asian veterans didn’t matter to the sellers and their agents.

Just another whack job idea from SF politicians. Pander to the 5% and don’t give a crap about 35% of the residents.

Reading these comments I can tell many have missed the real grift. They do not mean to literally give $5m in cash to a qualifying individual. This isnt how a good government grift works.

They would first hire 100 employees, pay them lavishly for 5 years with fully funded pensions. Whatever is left would slowly be distributed over as many years as possible in order to keep the 100 headcount fully funded.

The organization setup to handle this will be a line item of ‘administration fee’ and reduce the payout by 80% to each individual.

This will be an absolute legal shitshow that a massive chunk of the city is going to rebel against. Everyone has a story as to why they deserve that money/shouldn't have to foot that bill. How does this work if your parents immigrated from Africa, why would you qualify for reparations then? What about tax payers that immigrated from other countries or who's parents are immigrants? Why would they have to foot this bill, their ancestors had nothing to do with slavery in this country. The Chinese built this city, the Japanese were interned and literally lost their homes. Why aren't they getting reparations?

This article claims that around 3k of SF's homeless population are black. How do you distribute this for the mentally ill that undoubtedly make a massive percentage of these 3000 people? There's going to be a lot of fraud happening to claim that five million those people are entitled to.

Mark my words, a lot of supposed progressives are going to realize maybe they're more moderate democrats than they thought.

The group is smart. It knows the only place it may pass is nonsensical SF. And this worries me a bit ngl: “Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin told me he hopes his colleagues will approve AARAC’s recommendations.”

I’m 2.5% African based on my DNA test and I’ll be satisfied with $100k, 5 tacos from El Farolito and an apology note from mayor Breed. I take checks, Venmo, PayPal, Zelle and even Western Union transfers. Thanks

Nobody who has been wronged should receive reparations unless everyone who has been wronged receives reparations.

The government (local, state and/or federal) has screwed over so many different types of people though for a long time. I kind of feel like reparations should go first to Native Americans, as they were kind of first in line here for getting screwed.
