SF mayor announces plan to facilitate safe injection sites despite lack of state authorization

San Francisco plans to try to thread a legislative needle to allow the opening of safe injection sites in the city. Such sites would allow individuals to use heavy drugs like heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl in a safe and supervised environment.

If only we could invest in other things. Mental health services, rehab, housing... but I'm sure none of that will help 馃檪

Why don鈥檛 we spend this money on police to lock up drug dealers and violent homeless.

I understand this is controversial. However, if people want to reduce the number of people dying on the street from overdose, this is a proven way to do so.

This is an evidence based way to reduce the harm on our streets. If that is an outcome you want, then this is a thing you support.

great, I don't want to see people shooting up and this has the added benefit of saving lives and *potentially* allowing people to be linked to more services

I had a friend who was an addict. I tried my best to get them help, but failed.

The stark reality is that the only thing an addict wants is more drugs. They don't want to get clean, they don't care about housing, they don't care about the physical condition they end up in, they just want more drugs. Nothing else matters to them.

These injection sites are the city acquiescing to addicts. If you give them drug paraphernalia, they will continue to do more drugs, but now with confidence and in a way they can justify the use to themselves because now it's sanctioned by the city. It might appear to solve a short-term problem of addicts shooting up on the street, but all it really does is move them out of sight and kick the problem down the road. It solves nothing long term.

The only way to break this downwards spiral of to get strict on enforcement, take the drugs away and make rehab non-optional for addicts. It's unacceptable for society to allow these people to kill themselves slowly on the street.

Is there anyway to replace her or are we just along for the ride? Or is it way more complicated than that? I walked through civic center last night and it's the worst I've seen in my 15 years of living here.

Someone whose more versed in this stuff than I am: is it possible to go to the federal district court to get an injunction on this so that we wouldn't have to deal with the kooky state court judges we have here in SF?

These people need to be arrested and institutionalized, but in rehab centers instead of prison. It鈥檚 the most productive way to reduce drug use, and housing a person in rehab is actually less costly than housing them in prison.

I don't understand. What will they be injecting, and where da fuq will they get it from?? Won't these sites become magnets for dealers?

Why do we never vote on stuff like that? Last ballot has something about city buying a GG park parking garage, is this the extent of what we are allowed to give input on? I鈥檓 not saying we should vote on every safe injection site, but maybe on a concept of whether we want any

Out of sight, out of mind! SF politicians should be forced to work from these sites. Can鈥檛 sweep it under the rug.

The chronicle last fall profiled the New York City injection site versus a temporary one in SF. In New York City you had to give your name, talk to a social worker to at least check in and could talk to a nurse. When you use the drugs they were careful to give you only the minimum amount of Narcan if you needed to minimize withdrawal. In San Francisco you didn鈥檛 need to provide any details or talk to anyone just go out to the yard do your drugs and get blasted back with Max Narcan immediately if needed.
