‘Overheated and irrational’: S.F. politicians take constituents to task over racist reparations response

San Francisco supervisors denounce the backlash to local reparations efforts – and detail how opposition is less Republican-led than homegrown.

How to lose Asian American and white support speedrun (1619%).

Spicy.
Peskin:
“I, too, have been startled in this allegedly liberal progressive city by the response that I have heard on the streets, that I have received in email and in letters, that is antithetical to my beliefs of what I think San Franciscans believe,” said board President Aaron Peskin.
You're not out of touch, Peskin, it's everyone else.
And the nu-Chronicle is so sad:
Despite the city’s reputation as a progressive stronghold, recent years have shown San Francisco isn’t immune to being swayed by conservative ideology on critical issues, whether it’s policing or criminal justice reform.
Pulse of the city:
At the conclusion of Tuesday’s seven-hour meeting, which featured more than 60 speakers from the public urging the city to embrace reparations, all 11 supervisors unanimously accepted the committee’s comprehensive proposal, moving it to the next stage of a legislative process where the biggest decisions still lay ahead.
"It's despicable that you barbarians would be critical of our wasting time on a totally illegal and theatrical project, when you, our constituents, pay us to spend that time on city matters. For shame!"
Supervisor Ahsha Safaí took the sentiment further in a passionate speech calling on non-Black residents to recognize the privilege the color of their skin may afford them.
I'm sure that's what his majority non-white and immigrant district is thinking about when they go to work every day.
Or, as Mandelman said: “The fury this little report has inspired among some people is itself evidence of the imperative of actually making reparations.”
I agree though. Better that they spend time on pie-in-the-sky stuff like this than legislate this city into an even deeper pit.

“Thanks should go to the loudmouthed San Franciscans who couldn’t stifle their bigoted thoughts.”
Please tell me this was an editorial and not a regular Chronicle article. Also, as a young SF resident, I don’t understand the uproar every time someone says or does something that isn’t hyper-progressive. As if there’s a law that only one kind of thinking is allowed in this city.

The real question is, what are they using this obviously stupid and illegal policy proposal to distract from?

Rachel Dolezal heard about this potential benefit and is moving to S.F.

If the price tag is five million dollars per black resident, then I’m totally ok being labeled a racist.

This is why I can’t take progressive seriously anymore. Lets give a bunch of money to people when we are in a budget deficit! Let’s rename schools instead of getting kids back to school!

What happens when reparations are paid, and 10 years later economic disparities are the same?

I’ve proposed to every man and woman I know who qualifies.

The silver lining is it's exposed how completely out of touch they are. Here's hoping this may be the straw that breaks the camel's back, so we can finally clear house and start again next time.

ok with the 5,000,000 per person as long as elon musk pays for it by himself

If you can't fix the drug dealing or car burglary problems, you've got no business handing out $5MM lump sum checks to anyone.

I love how they note that criticism came from "the conservative outrage machine".

The real reparations will be all the money spent on commissions, consultants, studies, etc. If they're smart, they can drag this process out for years and turn it into an industry.

As an older white guy, no ones asking my opinion, but I'm puzzled how giving 5 million dollars to San Francisco residents is somehow restitution for the millions of Black American's across the US. It strikes me as a good intention that will possibly have serious blowback. If lottery winners have taught us anything, that explosive windfall of cash often does more harm than good. Why not create a business and/or education fund with that money and invest in generations of living and future black people?

Or, as Mandelman said: “The fury this little report has inspired among some people is itself evidence of the imperative of actually making reparations.”
Textbook Kafka trap.

All so some politicians can say 'okay did my part nothing left to do here, oh and no one can ever even imply I've been discriminatory about anything ever again'

Another example of how SF politicians, govt officials, and print media despise nothing more than the real people of San Francisco.
