People don't understand rent control in SF:

  • you ARE allowed to increase rents yearly (last year it was 3.5%)
  • you ARE allowed to make improvements and pass on cost as rent
  • units are set to market rate for new tenants

There are literally 1000s of landlords making $$$$ on rent controlled units. Some folks here making it sound like all these landlords are poor and broke because they can't make a profit from their rent control units.

It’s such an entitled feeling they just because they’ve lived in a rental for x many years, they deserve to continue living there for $550/mo.

In the absence of rent control, this couple downsizes, now that they don't need those extra bedrooms. With rent control, they sit empty, exacerbating the housing crisis.
