Finally! It’s NOT safe or compassionate or kind to allow crazed people to be a danger to themselves and others. I’m EXTREMELY glad medical professionals will be able to place those who need it under a hold.

A new law will give about three dozen paramedics the authority to impose mental health holds on disturbed people as the city turns to non-police responses to deal with crises often visible on the streets. The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the legislation sponsored by Supervisor Ahsha Safaí on Tuesday.

I hope there is a system in place to continue to help these people after the temporary mental health hold ends

I’m all for this, but what happens after the 72 hours? These are usually folks with chronic mental health problems who need extensive and in some cases lifelong support.

Are we going to find out that the city has reserved 20 beds for this and mental health holds can only happen when there's an available bed?

Because it wasn't like it was impossible or legally prohibited to bring people in from the crazy before. There just wasn't any useful place to put people, especially at the scale we need.
