Toronto to deter encampments by contracting private security guards to patrol some parks 24/7

The City of Toronto will have private security guards patrol a handful of parks 24/7 this summer to deter people from setting up encampments and to notify city staff whenever new tents go up.

So some Indian international students are going to stroll around night while WhatsApp calling their parents back home?

Hope they stay safe.

Hope they hire Garda so they can save some money cuz those guys pay shit to their guards.

Edit: but in all seriosness what do security guards who most of the time get paid $18-20/h gonna do? Will theu confront potentially unstable person amd risk their safety?

Well there's only fifteen hundred parks in Toronto, plus ravines, under bridges, and other non-park greenspace, so I'm sure that will take care of the problem once and for all.

This is why the city fails everything. This won't work. I worked on encampment crews for the City and its a tonedeaf clusterfuck. Complete fucking idiots

I'm sure this will come out of the already bloated Toronto Police budget right?
Right?

I wonder what the City people think the homeless are going to do. Vanish into the ether? Take up jobs as security guards patrolling empty parks at 3 AM to make sure no one is sleeping there and find housing with their new salaries?

Just kidding. I don't wonder at all. It's quite clear that these people could not give a shit about the homeless - so they have given exactly zero thought as to where the homeless will go.

Would be awesome to see less money being wasted on hiding our problems and more municipal/provincial/federal led affordable housing projects. It's not to say there are none, but there are clearly not enough. What is happening to people that they believe living in a park in a tent is required of them?

Sets a terrible precedent where you have private companies policing public lands like a park.

Open up mental institutions and drug addiction institution.

This is a waste of money and resources that does nothing to solve the problem and just makes it worse.

I have a feeling this is going to end badly for some poor security guard.

As a city employee who works in parks, I had a homeless person spit in my face because I asked them politely to please not throw their empty cans in the grass. Where I was currently cutting the grass.

Fun.

How about the city get serious about making housing affordable so we don’t need to hire rent-a-cops at a perpetual cost instead?

So they're just looking to relocate them to anywhere else? How in the fuck does this solve anything?

As a security guard I wouldn’t be kicking them out if they are being peaceful, most these people didn’t choose homelessness and they don’t deserve to be treated like crap because they can’t afford the exorbitant rent that is being charged.
