A tax on parking could raise more than $500 million for Toronto. The city’s unprecedented money crunch has given the idea new traction

The answer to Toronto's money woes could be hiding in its parking lots. Several downtown city councillors this week threw their weight behind an old solution to Toronto's budget crunch: a commercial parking levy — or a tax on the city's...

“We want to incentivize people however we can to come back down, to come back to the office, come back to the stores and restaurants.”
Disappointing to see this take. The city should not rely on the office worker for its finances - It honestly sucks that some people are forced to spend the $6 - 20 on transit, the $15+ on lunch all so that they "stimulate the downtown economy"
Downtown should be attractive in its own right, similar to transit. There shouldn't be a need to force people in, or force people to take transit.

How much money did Rob Ford throw away again when he cancelled license plate fees? Re-institute that.

While I do see merit to the idea, especially if all the funds raised can go into the TTC's operating budget, I would be surprised if this tax actually happens. Toronto Council is suburban heavy and those councillors are not going to support a tax on parking, especially when their constituents rely on their cars due to poor civil planning and transportation options.

City of Toronto parking permits are $17/month... maybe start with that. I have no idea why they are so cheap.

I’m cool with it as a driver and a owner of parking, I just hope the city gets their heads out of their asses and ducking make transit bearable. The TTC is a shit show and one of the worst transit system I’ve rode on in many major cities.

Good. How has this not been done yet, free parking is a missing opportunity to raise money on wasted space.

This is a good idea it would also push people to transit

Tax churches!…. Way too many religious groups are using their funds to lobby politicians. Start taxing them!
