Toronto is putting aside millions for World Cup 2026

The city’s plan assumes that the provincial and federal governments will each contribute a third of the total cost, even though neither has agreed to it.

You know who needs our scant tax dollars in this budget crunch?
The poor?
The homeless?
Our collapsing infrastructure?
No! One of the most wealthy and egregiously corrupt organizations on the face of the planet! Thats why we pay taxes! So the wealthy can get wealthier.

Bad gamble... There should be 0$ for one of worlds biggest scammers. FIFA.

Fix the roads? No. Bike lanes? No. Help the homeless? No. Efficient city infrastructure, bylaw enforcement? No.
More useless cops? Yes.
Arbitrary distraction years away? Sink money into it.

Guess I’m the minority that thinks Toronto hosting some games for the world’s biggest sporting event is incredibly exciting.

This is what happens when you elect a conservative mayor. They waste money bribing organizations like FIFA to hold their stupid game here, then waste more money building stadiums that will go underused afterwards. Meanwhile all the profits we're promised from tourism seems to fail to materialize.

Has any city ever recouped their investment after hosting the World Cup?

Always funny to see people who think that not having any events in the city (injecting hundreds of millions into the local economy), is some how going to mean we will solve our housing and homelessness issue or drive wages up. It’s such typical Reddit reaction to live in binary opinion World and scream about social issues that are not related to the topic at hand.

Let’s join the pantheon of countries that get scammed by FIFA/IOC https://www.managementstudyguide.com/effects-of-fifa-world-cup-on-economy.htm

The amount of money this event will inject into the city will far outweigh what it will cost to host. Hundreds of millions of dollars into hotels, bars, restaurants, public transit etc.

People in Liberty Village gonna make out like bandits by renting out their places during World Cup. Nice!

It is exciting…. I can’t wait for the World Cup to visit our City. Always going to be a bunch of virtue signalers screaming about how hosting an event will mean we can’t solve homelessness. As if we’d be fixing everything without it. Some people just love to be outraged

In my opinion, this is wasteful. We’d be far better off going for the F1, especially as it’s an annual event. Toronto desperately needs a proper racetrack.

When Toronto hosts the Grey Cup, the temporary expansion to 45000 seats costs barely 5% off this temporary expansion

If we get some really good games and Toronto's infrastucture can support the additional visitors. It should be worth it. Can't wait to see Canada win a game.

Everyone is pessimistic about the World Cup. Enjoy some Football!! All the problems you’re mentioning will still be here in 10-15-20 years. Make the most out of time you have! Live a little

Let’s all just not do anything good for the city and wallow in sadness and fear for the rest of our lives…. That will fix the homelessness issue and fix healthcare right?

They could care less about the cash crunch and issues plaguing our city. All they see are the kick backs, financial incentives and having their pockets padded.
Why would they care about anything else?

The fuck, why?
TTC, low income housing, roads, deficit. Let's focus on that before bread and circuses, ok?
